RFK Jr spending more than he’s raising as campaign faces new test

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign spent more money than it raised in January, presenting new challengers for the long-shot candidate.

According to a report filed by Kennedy’s campaign to the Federal Election Commission, reviewed by Politico, his campaign spent over $3.2 million in January, compared to roughly $2.7 million brought in. This left him at the end of the month with about $4.8 million in his war chest.

The largest share of the spending was on safety, something Kennedy has leveled criticism against the Biden administration for not providing to him. Being the son of Robert F. Kennedy, the target of one of the 20th century’s most infamous assassinations, Kennedy Jr. has openly expressed concern that he could suffer the same fate.

Without a designation of Secret Service protection from the White House, Kennedy’s campaign has given $430,000 to the firm of security consultant Gavin de Becker.

The rest was reportedly spent on staff salaries, digital media services and advertising, campaign merchandise, event catering, and more.

Kennedy first tried to run in the Democratic primary against Biden, then switched to an independent bid, attempting to poach voters from Biden and former President Donald Trump by appealing to bipartisan sensibilities.

Kennedy has so far failed to come close to Biden and Trump’s polling numbers, but he managed to get 8% of the vote in an Emerson poll last week.
