Meghan McCain has theorized that Republican Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake is experiencing “awful” internal polling among voters after she walked back comments she made against McCain’s father, the late John McCain.
Lake stated in a recent interview that her 2022 comment for “McCain Republicans” to leave a campaign event she was hosting had only been a joke and that she believes John McCain would have laughed at it since he had “a great sense of humor.” McCain was asked if she believed her father would have found Lake’s comment funny, to which McCain stated that “we all know the answer to that.”
“My entire take on this situation is just that the internal polling for Kari Lake’s campaign must be just staggeringly awful and scary to them when it comes to independents and McCain Republicans not voting for her,” McCain said on the Outspoken podcast.
McCain added that she believes there is “a giant swath” of voters in Arizona who would never vote for Lake, largely in part due to Lake’s comments against McCain’s father. She added that her father is still a beloved Republican lawmaker even years after his death from brain cancer in 2018.
McCain claimed on Wednesday that Lake was trying to “walk back” her comments against her father and that Lake realized she could not win her Senate race “without us.” Lake offered to discuss her and McCain’s feud in person, stating she believes their fathers would do “everything they could to save this Republic.” McCain resoundly rejected this offer, posting “NO PEACE, B****” on X.
On Thursday, McCain doubled down on her opposition to Lake, saying it was “hilarious” how “the MAGA Cheeto Jesus minions” believe they can trash talk people who supported John McCain without facing any consequences.

Recent polling data indicate that Lake’s Democratic opponent in the Arizona Senate race, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), would beat Lake and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) in a hypothetical three-way election and would also beat Lake if Sinema were not in the race. The independent senator, who left the Democratic Party in December 2022, has not yet confirmed if she will seek reelection.
