The University of Pennsylvania Police Department is openly recruiting candidates it labels “progressive applicants” to join its ranks.
The recruiting pitch is only present on the Division of Public Safety’s homepage and not on the linked police department employment page.

“The University of Pennsylvania Police Department seeks progressive applicants for the position of Police Officer,” the homepage reads. Meanwhile, the department’s employment page uses more neutral language to indicate that “the University of Pennsylvania Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer.”
The university did not respond to a request for comment seeking to clarify what the university meant by “progressive.”

The website directs would-be applicants to send relevant job application documents to a generic email address and says the university “values diversity and seeks talented students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.”
“The University of Pennsylvania does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, creed, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, age, disability, veteran status or any other legally protected class status in the administration of its admissions, financial aid, educational or athletic programs, or other University-administered programs or in its employment practices,” the university says in a disclaimer.
Complaints, it continues, should be directed to the institution’s Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs.
The university’s public safety division requires all staff to complete an annual diversity training course that covers “various topics related to diversity.”
Recent trainings have included a “restorative justice” training in 2018, personal “resilience” trainings in 2016 and 2017, and an “Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement” training in 2019-2020.

The website also says newly sworn-in university police officers are required to complete a special diversity training for law enforcement that includes a trip to the Holocaust Museum. The institution says the training’s “current curriculum has been refined to include bias-based profiling issues and going forward revisions will continue to remain dynamic and current.”
