A 14-year-old girl is dead and 13 others were injured in a shooting at an “unauthorized concert” in North Charleston, South Carolina, over the weekend.
Police officers responded to reports of shots being fired around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday after a fight broke out at what was described by North Charleston Police Chief Reggie Burgess as an “unauthorized event.”
“We in law enforcement had no clue about this,” Burgess said at a Sunday press conference. “If we would have, we would have probably been able to save lives.”
TWO DEAD AND 12 INJURED AFTER SHOOTING AT NEW JERSEY PARTY WITH OVER 100 GUESTS
Multiple shooters began firing after the fight broke out, leaving 14 people injured, law enforcement officials added. Some of the victims were treated on the scene, while others were transported to local hospitals.
Burgess said he knew the family of the 14-year-old and mourned the loss of “another young person.”
“It’s sad, it’s unfortunate, and it’s a ridiculous time in our lives, in this world, that we’re standing right here today, on a Sunday, a day of worship, grieving a 14-year-old that lost her life,” Burgess said.
