A Texas police officer is being credited with saving a young man’s life after he was attempting to jump off a highway overpass.

Vidor Police Chief Rod Carroll hailed Officer Brittany Haley as a hero for her calm and quick response to the scene where the 20-year-old man was leaning off the Texas Interstate 10 overpass at Highway 12.

“She exemplifies what it means to be a police officer,” Carroll told KBMT. “She does what our community desires. She is compassionate; she has empathy for others. I think those are the two most important characteristics you can have for an officer.”

Haley said she relied on her training to handle the intense and high-stress situation.

“When he leaned back, he closed his eyes,” Haley said. “He took a deep breath and started to do a deep countdown amongst himself. I felt like he was about to jump.”

“I used the sound of the traffic to get closer to him, and I told him I couldn’t hear him, and I just made a connection from there,” Haley added, noting that she could tell by him talking with her that “he wanted to live.”

Body camera footage showed the moment the man had a change of heart.

“I continued talking to him,” Haley said. “I don’t know what I said, to be honest, just continued on that connection that I made with him before, and instead of him going backwards, he jumped forward.”
