McCarthy to unveil ‘Commitment to America’ policy agenda ahead of midterm elections

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will unveil his policy agenda on Sept. 19 in the Pittsburgh area as the GOP looks to sway voters ahead of the midterm election cycle.

The “Commitment to America” policy platform has four planks: “an economy that is strong,” “a government that’s accountable,” “a future that’s free,” and “a nation that’s safe.”

The document lays out plans to unravel Democrats’ sweeping reconciliation bill, address inflation and supply chain problems, establish “safe and fair elections,” fight for Second Amendment rights, “confront Big Tech,” pass a “parents’ Bill of Rights,” secure the southern border, fund the police, and combat threats from China.

GOP leaders, including McCarthy, have laid out similar proposals for past cycles.

Former Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) touted his “Better Way” agenda in an effort to offer a contrast to Democrats’ plans, and the effort is reminiscent of the “Contract with America” led by former Speaker Newt Gingrich, albeit more concise. The 1994 plan detailed conservative goals in the weeks leading up to Election Day, which some credit with the party’s success in picking up seats.

In addition to laying out four areas House Republicans plan to focus on if they take back the majority, “Commitment to America” presents talking points for members to tout back home.
