Positive opinions of socialism and capitalism have dropped slightly for adults aligned with both major political parties as the United States is engulfed in economic uncertainty.
The favorability of the two economic systems has dropped among adults since the question was last asked in 2019, according to a poll from the Pew Research Center.
TRUMP’S APPROVAL RATING DROPS TO 18-MONTH LOW: POLL
For socialism, 36% of adults say they hold a positive view of the system, a 6-percentage-point drop from 2019, and only 6% said they have a very positive view of socialism in the new poll, a 3-percentage-point drop from 2019. The majority of adults, 60%, say they hold a negative view of the system, a 5-percentage-point increase from 2019, and 33% of adults hold a very negative view, a 1-percentage-point increase from 2019, the new poll showed.
With capitalism, 57% of adults hold a positive view, an 8-percentage-point drop from 2019, with 21% saying they have a very positive view of the system, a drop of 3 percentage points. The minority of adults who view capitalism negatively grew by 6 percentage points from 2019 to 39%, with 12% saying they have a very negative view of the system, a 2-percentage-point increase.
For people on both sides of the aisle, socialism and capitalism, saw drops in favorability, with Democratic-leaning adults who hold a positive view of capitalism dropping below 50%.
The percentage of Republican-leaning adults who hold a positive view of socialism dropped by 1 percentage point from 2019, from 15% to 14%, and the number who view capitalism in a positive light dropped by 4 percentage points, from 78% to 74%.
The number of Democratic-leaning adults who view socialism positively dropped by 8 percentage points from 2019, from 65% to 57%, while the percentage of those who view capitalism positively dropped by 9 percentage points, from 55% to 46%.
The poll highlights that the pandemic did not help the favorability of either economic system because inflation remains high among other market uncertainties.
