Gun control-loving California doesn’t mind lighter sentences for gun criminals in Los Angeles

As Los Angeles grapples with shootings and homicides, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon refuses to add sentencing enhancements for crimes committed with firearms. So where are the California Democrats who prop themselves up as leaders on gun control?

More than 80 handguns and shotguns were among the items stolen from cargo trains in Los Angeles by looters — one of many crime problems that have been plaguing the city for months. Los Angeles has seen 628 people killed by gunshots in the last 12 months, according to the Los Angeles Times. Now, there are several more guns in the hands of people who acquired them illegally. But the man in charge of battling crime in Los Angeles doesn’t care.

Among his many soft-on-crime policies and dispositions, Gascon is vehemently opposed to sentencing enhancements, including enhancements for crimes committed while using guns. Gascon most prominently sent out a fundraising email decrying sentencing enhancements just hours after philanthropist Jacqueline Avant was shot and killed during a robbery. Avant’s killer had an extensive criminal history, and Gascon decided not to add a firearm enhancement that would have added 25 years to his sentence.

Adding these enhancements for people convicted of violent crimes seems like a no-brainer, regardless of political affiliation. We should all want criminals who use firearms in their crimes to be punished accordingly. And yet, not only does Gascon oppose this, but California Democrats have nothing to say about it either.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom prides himself as one of the major voices on gun control in the country. Most recently, he proposed crafting a gun control law similar to that of Texas’s abortion law so that the state “can ban deadly weapons of war and save lives.” Earlier this month, Democrats in the state Legislature introduced a bill that would make it easier to sue manufacturers.

California Democrats are happy to do everything they can to restrict legal gun ownership, but the district attorney of a county of more than 10 million people does everything he can to lessen punishments for convicted criminals who are carrying out the very gun violence we are told Democrats want to stop. Gascon should be showered in condemnations from Democrats in Sacramento, yet none of them have much to say.
