Public’s belief in God drops to historic low: Poll

The percentage of people who believe in God has dropped 6 points from 2017 and hit a record low, according to Gallup’s Values and Beliefs poll.

From 1944 to 2011, over 90% of the country believed in God; now, that number sits at 81%, according to poll data.

Roughly 17% do not believe there is a God.

“Belief in God has fallen the most in recent years among young adults and people on the left of the political spectrum [liberals and Democrats],” according to a poll analysis released by Gallup.

“These groups show drops of 10 or more percentage points comparing the 2022 figures to an average of the 2013-2017 polls.”

The majority of subgroups have seen a modest decline, but there is little to no change in married adults or conservatives, Gallup reported.

“The groups with the largest declines are also the groups that are currently least likely to believe in God, including liberals [62%], young adults [68%] and Democrats [72%],” analysis read.

“Belief in God is highest among political conservatives [94%] and Republicans [92%], reflecting that religiosity is a major determinant of political divisions in the U.S.,” it said.

Along with asking if they believe in God, Gallup also asked respondents if God can hear prayers and if God acts on those prayers.

“About half of those who believe in God — equal to 42% of all Americans — say God hears prayers and can intervene on a person’s behalf,” according to Gallup. “Meanwhile, 28% of all Americans say God hears prayers but cannot intervene, while 11% think God does neither.”

The poll was conducted via telephone interviews from May 2 to May 22 with a random sample of 1,007 adults in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.
