President Joe Biden told reporters Monday that there’s no “need for concern” about a “new cold war” breaking out with China.
His comments came at a press conference following Monday’s bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both the White House and Beijing had previously announced that the leaders extensively discussed China’s relationship with Taiwan.

“We’re not going to be able to work everything out, it’s not going to be all ‘Kumbaya,'” Biden told reporters in Bali. “But I do not believe there is a need for concern about a new cold war.”

The president claimed he and Xi “were candid and clear with one another across the board” and stated he currently does “not think there’s any imminent attempt on the part of China to invade Taiwan.”
Biden said he “made it clear that our policy in Taiwan has not changed at all.”
“It’s the same exact position we’ve had, I made it clear that we want to see cross-strait issues peacefully resolved, and so it never has to come to that,” the president concluded. “I’m convinced that he understood exactly what I was saying. I understood what he was saying.”
Biden added that he and Xi committed to holding additional meetings, and the White House announced that Secretary of State Antony Blinken would soon travel to Beijing to continue Monday’s talks.
