White House press secretary Jen Psaki mocked a reporter at Thursday’s briefing for asking a question about liberal educators potentially using their platforms to “indoctrinate” children.
“Sen. Tom Cotton says the nation’s wealthiest colleges are indoctrinating people with what he calls un-American ideas,” the reporter first posed. “He is proposing a new tax targeting the largest private endowments. He says it would raise $2 million a year. I wonder, does the president believe that our largest schools are indoctrinating our youth with un-American ideas?”
Cotton’s office contends the tax endowment would bring in $2 billion annually.

“Now you’ve intrigued me,” Psaki responded with a grin. “What are these un-American ideas?”
The reporter responded that Cotton’s legislation doesn’t “lay out” a definition but noted that Cotton frequently attacks the 1619 Project and critical race theory.

“Well, without much detail on where he thinks our youth are being indoctrinated — that sounds very mysterious and dangerous — I don’t think that we would think, believe that educating the youth and future leaders of the country on systemic racism is indoctrination,” Psaki countered. “That’s actually responsible.”
