The San Francisco Board of Elections has certified a petition to recall the city’s liberal district attorney, whose refusal to prosecute many crimes attracted ire from some constituents.
The election board’s certification of the petition Tuesday will force District Attorney Chesa Boudin to face a recall election in 2022. The recall vote of the district attorney, who has been accused of ignoring laws and court decisions he does not like, will occur on June 7, 2022, during the state’s primary.
“As prescribed under California Elections Code 11225, the Department reviewed 4,174 signatures (5% of the total submitted) that were randomly selected from the 83,484 signatures submitted with the petition,” Director of Elections John Arntz wrote in a letter to petition organizers Tuesday, according to multiple outlets. “Based on this review, the Department determined the petition contained a number of valid signatures greater than the minimum of 51,325 signatures required for the petition to be deemed successful.”

In October, organizers submitted more than 83,000 signatures to election officials requesting a recall election, roughly 32,000 more than required to put the issue on the ballot. The effort gained broad support, with two prosecutors leaving the district attorney’s office and joining the effort to recall him last month.
Boudin, the son of Weather Underground terrorists who were convicted of murder and step-son of Weather Underground founder William Ayers, countered with an anti-recall rally in October, where he told supporters he has consistently served the people’s needs.
“This has nothing to do with the facts or the real challenges our communities are facing,” he told supporters. “This has everything to do with disrespecting the will of the people.”
Boudin drew criticism in 2019 for eliminating cash bail and refusing to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In March 2021, Boudin dismissed the killing of an 84-year-old Thai immigrant as a “sort of temper tantrum” gone wrong. He has also avoided incarcerating detainees where possible.

Boudin faced a separate recall effort in January 2021 after two San Francisco women were allegedly killed by a parolee behind the wheel of a stolen car.
The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office did not return the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment.
