Vice President Kamala Harris hosted drag queen Shangela at her residence Tuesday, where he gave a speech.
Shangela, also known as Darius Jeremy Pierce, was the first drag queen to make an appearance at the vice presidential residence while in costume. Tuesday was the anniversary of Stonewall, a protest that sparked from a clash between patrons of a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York, and police, who were raiding the bar at the time.
“Last night I had the honor of becoming the first drag queen in drag to ever attend an event at the residence of the Vice President of America. It was also the first time that an LGBTQ Pride Event had been held at the residence,” Pierce wrote on Instagram. “Thank you Madame [Vice President] for being an authentic ally and for not only holding this LGBTQ event at your residence, but for also inviting me to make a few welcoming remarks.”

Pierce has competed on the television show RuPaul’s Drag Race three times.
Harris would also commemorate the 53rd anniversary of Stonewall on Twitter.
“Stonewall changed everything,” Harris wrote. “We’ve made incredible progress in the fight for equality, but these rights are on the line. We’ll never give up the fight to safeguard marriage equality, protect LGBTQI+ rights, and stand up to hateful attacks.”

Stonewall was sparked by a transgender woman named Marsha P. Johnson, who was a prominent figure in the subsequent riots outside the bar.
