Former NFL star praises Jaguars decision to sign Tebow and says Kaepernick too divisive

Former NFL wide receiver Jimmy Smith defended the Jacksonville Jaguars for signing Tim Tebow, saying that they “need a guy” like him on the team as opposed to Colin Kaepernick.

“We need a guy like Tim Tebow,” Smith, who played for the Jaguars from 1995 to 2005, told TMZ this week, adding that Tebow is “a hometown hero who has love for the city anyway.”

Tebow, a former University of Florida quarterback who was drafted into the NFL in 2010 but has been out of the league for several years, will reportedly sign with Jaguars soon to play tight end.

Many on social media expressed dismay with the news of Tebow’s signing, insisting that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick should have been signed by a team first.

Smith dismissed that idea, arguing that Kaepernick, who popularized kneeling for the national anthem to protest police brutality in 2017, is too divisive of a figure.

“We don’t need Colin Kaepernick on our team,” Smith said, adding that he could “divide our locker room.”
