Georgia’s largest newspaper is accusing U.S. Senate hopeful Herschel Walker of lying about a published article to solicit donations from supporters with about two weeks to go before Election Day.
The Walker campaign, which has pushed back against the newspaper’s allegations, claimed in a fundraising email that a protester at a campaign event last week insulted the political newcomer and falsely stated the Atlanta Journal-Constitution failed to report the incident.

The newspaper reported the incident in the Jolt, its daily newsletter, the day after it occurred, but that didn’t stop Walker’s campaign from going after the media outlet.
Walker’s email to donors claimed a male AJC reporter “laughed in our faces” after being told of the insult.

The Atlanta-based newspaper hit back, claiming the reporter who was covering the event was a woman and never had a conversation with anyone from Walker’s staff. The newspaper also said it has repeatedly pressed Walker’s campaign for additional information about whom they spoke to and what was said but that Walker’s campaign has not responded.
FIRST DAY OF EARLY VOTING IN GEORGIA SHATTERS PREVIOUS MIDTERM RECORD
The AJC has taken issue with the claim it sat on a story, as well as one of its reporters laughing off the situation.
“We devote ourselves to deep and thorough coverage of politics so that our readers can be fully informed when they make their voting decisions,” AJC Editor Kevin Riley said. “In fact, we have a journalist assigned full-time to the Walker campaign and often have several staff members at campaign events. The complete fabrication of this false story demonstrates why we’re committed to such coverage.”
Riley added: “Voters deserve to know about such a blatantly cynical effort to encourage donations. We’re disappointed that the Walker campaign would choose to recklessly impugn and endanger our journalists.”
Walker’s Communications Director Will Kiley pushed back, telling the Washington Examiner that it is the AJC that got it wrong.
“This happened and the AJC and Raphael Warnock should be ashamed by their lack of appropriate commentary on the racism thrown at Herschel Walker,” he said Sunday afternoon.

Walker and Warnock are in a statistical dead heat heading into Election Day. The winner of the contest could determine which party takes control in the Senate next year.
