Trump has now met the required conditions for the contempt order to be lifted after paying $110,000 in fines last month, Judge Arthur Engoron ruled Wednesday. That money will be held in escrow while Trump appeals the original court order that found him in contempt on April 25.

“Although we are pleased that the court has lifted the contempt finding, we maintain that it was wholly unwarranted and improper in the first place,” said Alina Habba, a lawyer representing Trump. “We will push ahead with our appeal to secure justice for our client.”
Engoron had agreed to lift the order in May if Trump met a number of conditions, including paying all the fines he racked up by refusing to comply with a subpoena from New York Attorney General Attorney Letitia James related to her investigation into his business practices.
Trump’s legal team began filing a trove of documents to comply with Engoron’s conditions, including a submission of the Trump Organization’s policies on document storage and a review of files that had not been previously searched. Trump’s lawyers have repeatedly argued he does not possess the requested documents.

James opened the civil investigation into whether the Trump Organization improperly manipulated asset valuations for tax and business benefits following congressional testimony from former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen in 2019. Trump has accused the investigation of being politically motivated and has denied the allegations, filing a lawsuit in federal court to suspend the pending inquiry.
Trump, along with his children Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr., is scheduled to testify in James’s investigation starting July 15 after being ordered to appear for a deposition in February. The trio had initially appealed the deposition order but left the document request unchallenged, allowing the court to compel them to comply.
