The FBI has seized the cellphone of the Nevada Republican Party chairman as part of an investigation into a fake elector scheme, according to a report Thursday.
Michael McDonald, the top official in the Nevada GOP, is being looked into as part of a wider investigation scrutinizing a plan to send illegitimate electors to cast the state’s six electoral votes in the 2020 presidential election, according to a report from a CBS affiliate in Las Vegas.

Authorities also issued a search warrant for party secretary James DeGraffenreid, the report added.
McDonald and DeGraffenreid both reportedly signed a document signaling their support for former President Donald Trump, despite President Joe Biden carrying the state. State Republican Party officials convened their alternate slate of electors in the state capital of Carson City in December 2020 on the same day the actual state electors cast their votes for Biden.
McDonald defended the “historic” move to appoint and convene alternate electors at the time.
“The people of Nevada did not have a fair election due to the irregularities and fraud seen throughout the state,” he said. “With ongoing challenges and evidence left to be meaningfully investigated, we must submit our electoral votes for the rightful victors and allow Congress to make a determination.”
Biden defeated Trump by 33,596 votes in Nevada and received the six electoral votes for the state when the Electoral College convened in December 2020.

The Nevada GOP issued several challenges to the vote count in the state, alleging voter fraud and irregularities, but most lawsuits brought by the Trump campaign and its allies were tossed by federal courts. Biden was certified the winner of the state of Nevada and the election during a special session in January 2021.
A House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol that attempted to overturn the election results convened for its fifth day of hearings on Thursday.
