Some Democratic politicians and liberal pundits have been trying to convince people that crime isn’t a real issue. Apparently, black voters still haven’t gotten the memo.
According to Pew polling, 81% of registered black voters say that crime is “very important” to their midterm vote. That includes 82% of black Democrats.
One would think that, after a full summer of demanding that we listen to black voices and stop dismissing the concerns of black communities, Democrats would be attentive to the crime issue. But no.
ONLY 17% OF BLACK VOTERS SUPPORT DEFUNDING THE POLICE: POLL
Democrats and their media lackeys have tried to downplay crime as much as possible ahead of the midterm elections. The biggest offender has been New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is now saying that people raising concerns about crime in New York are “master manipulators” and “data deniers” who are spreading a “conspiracy” about New York not being a safe state. She also said that Republicans are just trying to scare people.
Crime ranks as the top issue among New York voters, and it is the second-most important issue to New York Democrats. Republicans must have some pretty good scaremongering propaganda if New York Democrats are apparently falling for it so completely.
Philip Bump at the Washington Post has taken a similar tact. Twice this month, he has complained in his columns that Fox News is covering crime. Bump is irked because crime in 2021 didn’t rise that much compared to 2020. Nationally, violent crime is at the same level as it was after its enormous and historic 2020 surge. Bump notes this as though it should mean no one should be talking about crime. It’s almost as if people remember how safe they were before that crime surge. How dare they!
Come to think of it, he sounds a lot like President Joe Biden talking about inflation — it doesn’t matter because it didn’t go up even higher this month than last!
In another piece, Bump opines that Fox News and the GOP are creating a narrative by focusing on crime. But the world does not revolve around Fox News. It revolves around people’s individual perception of their own safety, or lack thereof. Candidates from both parties are talking about crime, or dismissing it, as Hochul is doing, because it is an issue that people care about independent of cable news or other outside influences. Crime ranks near the top of the list of issues for independent voters. Again, 82% of black Democrats say crime is an important issue for their vote. Do all those black Democrats watch Fox News?

Hochul is now in a dogfight, almost solely because of her dismissive attitude toward crime. If she somehow survives this election, an election that she should have won easily, down-ballot Democrats are going to be slaughtered because of her weakness at the top of the ticket. Democrats ignored crime to their own political peril in 2020, and their ingenious strategy is poised to backfire once again.
