Two firemen dead and one in critical condition following California fire station shooting

Two firemen are dead and one is in critical condition following a Tuesday shooting at a Southern California fire station, according to authorities.

After responding to an emergency call at 10:55 a.m., officers arrived at the fire station to find one fireman, a 44-year-old man, shot multiple times in the torso, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said during a Tuesday press conference. The fireman was declared dead at the scene.

Another fireman, a 54-year-old captain, was transported to the hospital after being shot during the incident. Osby said the man was in stable but critical condition.

The suspect, who officials said was an off-duty fireman, returned to and barricaded himself in his home after the shooting took place, according to Osby.

The suspect was found dead in his pool with a gunshot wound to the head, another official said.

“This morning when I received the news, it was some of the worst news I’ve heard in my career, and as a fire chief, I’ve dealt with a lot of death, and a lot of fallen members of my department,” Osby said, adding, “I never thought that if it would occur that it would occur in this fashion.”

“It is with heavy hearts that the LACoFD confirms that a tragic shooting occurred at approximately 10:55 a.m. today at FS 81 in Agua Dulce,” the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted shortly before noon local time. “The Dept. is still in the process of gathering additional information & are cooperating with law enf. throughout this ongoing incident.”
