Florida firefighting helicopter crashes, no survivors found

At least one person is dead and three are unaccounted for after a firefighting helicopter crashed in Florida.

The Sikorsky UH-60 firefighting helicopter crashed around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday during a training exercise near the airport in Leesburg, Florida. Police have not disclosed who was aboard the chopper when it went down or any possible causes for the crash.

“Crews are still on scene mitigating hazards. The crash appears to be a total loss. No survivors have been located,” a social media post from Leesburg Fire Rescue read. “ONE confirmed death at this time. Most of the fire is under control now. US forestry is on scene plowing a line around the scene to prevent any vegetation fires.”

The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating the crash.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Eric Weiss said he didn’t have much information about the crash as of Tuesday night, though he said the agency was sending investigators down to Florida.
