The United Nations Human Rights Council is preparing to investigate Israel yet again. This time, the issue is its response to Hamas missile attacks. And as usual, we already know what verdict the antisemitic body, which as always is replete with human rights abusers, will reach. It’s another sham investigation.
The body approved the investigation with 24 members voting in favor. The genocidal, expansionist regime of China supported the investigation. So did the repressive dictatorships of Cuba and Venezuela. Vladimir Putin’s Russia is also on board, as are Libya and Pakistan. All of those countries sit on the Human Rights Council. All of them will certainly choose to condemn Israel for defending itself, once this “investigation” concludes.
The resolution that the council adopted makes no mention of Hamas or any other terrorist groups. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, a former president of Chile who couldn’t even be bothered to attend an event regarding China’s genocide against the Uyghur minority, declared in advance that Israel may have committed war crimes.
The U.N. has held Israel to a different standard than the rest of the world for decades, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the Human Rights Council. Since 2006, it has condemned Israel 95 times. Syria, which has been massacring civilians for years now, is a distant runner-up, with just 35 condemnations. North Korea has received only 14 condemnations and Iran just 11.
China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Pakistan combine for zero.
Any major discussion of human rights at the U.N. ends up becoming a joke. Authoritarian regimes should have no say in litigating the human rights records of other countries, but at the U.N., they get a vote that is equal to free countries and democracies. This makes it a grotesque institution that covers for some of the worst human rights abusers on the planet. And throw in some antisemitism for good measure, as Israel is held to an impossible standard that is never considered for any other country.
The U.N. is a joke, and it has been for years. Politicians who defer to it as some authoritative institution, as President Joe Biden does, think it is some vehicle for global deliberation. Instead, it’s a bloated bureaucracy that only cares about being paid by its member-states while it botches every crisis and issue it faces. It was true for the World Health Organization, and it’s true for the Human Rights Council.
