The shuffling on D.C. Council will be minimal, according to council sources and Tweets from Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells while he was inside an ongoing meeting with Chairman-elect Kwame Brown and the rest of the council.
The biggest unknown was where Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry would go after Brown announced that education would remain under his thumb in the committee of the whole.
Barry will head a committee on aging and community affairs. He had been without a committee since current Chairman Vince Gray removed him following a contract scandal in the spring. Barry was accused of funneling contracts to his girlfriend. He has since been cleared of any legal wrongdoing.
Brown has moved Wells, who has trumpeted transportation projects like the street cars, from human services to the transportation committee. He replaces Ward 1 Councilman Jim Graham, who will now head human services.
Ward 4 Councilwoman Muriel Bowser will take over the parks and libraries committee from Ward 5 Councilman Harry Thomas. He will take over economic development, which will be vacated by Kwame Brown when he ascends to chairman.
At-large Councilman David Catania will remain as the head of the health committee. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans will keep revenue and finance and at-large Councilman Phil Mendelson will keep his public safety committee. Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh will keep her government operations committee. Michael Brown will remain as head of the housing committee.
