Two House Democrats broke ranks with their party to oppose moving forward with twin gun control bills in a Wednesday afternoon House vote.
Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), centrists from challenging congressional districts, were the only Democrats to vote against a rule setting up a final vote on H.R. 2377, known as the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, and H.R. 7910, or the Protecting Our Kids Act. All House Republicans also opposed the rule.

The House rule, approved Wednesday in a 218-205 vote, also contained a resolution authored by Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) condemning the “great replacement theory,” which Democrats have blamed for motivating shootings like the recent massacre in Buffalo, New York.
H.R. 7910, which Republican leaders have nicknamed the “Unconstitutional Gun Restrictions Act,” would raise the minimum age to purchase semi-automatic firearms to 21 and make it a federal crime to manufacture, transport, or possess large-capacity magazines, among other provisions. H.R. 2377 would allow family members or law enforcement officials to ask federal courts to seize guns from a person deemed by a judge to be a threat to others or themselves temporarily, even if no crime has been committed. Such “Extreme Risk Protection Orders” are commonly known as red flag laws.
While Golden has previously voted against Democratic gun control legislation, Slotkin instead voiced support for H.R. 6370, or the Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act, which she sponsored.
“My bill is a practical approach to help keep our kids safe, in Michigan and across the country,” Slotkin tweeted, arguing her proposal means “if you’re a gun owner, like millions of Michiganders, you have to take reasonable steps to store your firearm.”

In the House of Representatives, a rule establishing parameters for debate and amendments that can be offered by individual members of Congress usually must be enacted before a bill can be passed in a final vote.
Representatives for Golden and Slotkin did not return the Washington Examiner’s requests for comment.
