The malfunction was discovered Sunday evening, and some group members were unable to use the stairs, which were described as similar to an external fire escape, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Jon Paxton told NBC News.

Paxton said that the group had the run of the caverns and access to a hotel suite and food.

A team worked Monday to try and repair the elevator but was unsuccessful, Paxton said.

Three people were hoisted from the caverns by a search and rescue team, according to ABC15 Arizona.
