Biden says US will ‘compete vigorously’ with China after Xi meeting

President Joe Biden is prepared to “compete” with China after his first in-person meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, sought to tamp down tensions between the two countries.

“We had an open and candid conversation about our intentions and our priorities,” Biden told reporters Monday in Bali, Indonesia. “We’re going to compete vigorously, but I’m not looking for conflict.”

Biden also commented on last week’s midterm elections, in which Democrats outperformed expectations by holding on to their Senate majority with Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s (D-NV) win over the weekend. Democrats have 203 House seats to Republicans’ 212, with 218 to claim control of the chamber.

“There was a strong rejection of political violence and voter intimidation, and there was an emphatic statement that, in America, the will of the people prevails,” Biden said.

Biden’s meeting with Xi at the Mulia hotel on the sidelines of the Group of 20 leaders summit lasted approximately three hours, according to the White House. Reflecting the U.S. readout, but only in part, Chinese state media reported Xi warned Biden not to cross “the first red line” of “the Taiwan question.”

“Anyone that seeks to split Taiwan from China will be violating the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation,” the Chinese said. “We hope to see, and are all along committed to, peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, but cross-strait peace and stability and ‘Taiwan independence’ are as irreconcilable as water and fire.”

“We hope that the U.S. side will match its words with action and abide by the One China policy and the three joint communiques,” they added.
