DHS to curb immigration arrests at schools, hospitals, and emergency shelters

The Department of Homeland Security will limit immigration arrests at various “protected” areas in further efforts at sanctuary-like policies.

Those areas include schools, hospitals, places of worship, and emergency shelters — anywhere “children gather” or people are seeking relief, according to a report that cited a memo from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“We can accomplish our law enforcement mission without denying individuals access to needed medical care, children access to their schools, the displaced access to food and shelter, people of faith access to their places of worship, and more,” Mayorkas said.

The policy also reportedly covers playgrounds, rallies, and other demonstrations.

The sanctuary-like rules are similar to those former President Donald Trump reversed from the Obama administration. Democratic-controlled localities have faced criticism from conservatives who disagree with police departments’ noncompliance with DHS to arrest illegal immigrants, especially those wanted for a crime.

Exceptions to Mayorkas’s guidelines include cases of a national security threat, risk of evidence in a criminal case being destroyed, risk of death or physical harm to another individual, and actively watching someone cross the border illegally in person.
