A 13-year-old boy died in a car crash while riding in a stolen 2018 Audi S5 coupe driven by another 13-year-old boy in Texas on Wednesday.

The Abilene Police Department was first tipped off about the car when it was alerted via the car’s Bosch security system that it had been in a crash around 3 a.m., also indicating the location of the crash. There was no evidence at the scene, according to a city press release. Police were able to better locate the four teenage boys, two aged 13, one aged 14, and another aged 15, after one of their parents saw them recording their joy ride in the stolen car on a social media livestream.

About an hour after the first alert, police received a report of theft at a convenience store in the neighboring city of Clyde. They believed that these same four teenagers were involved in the crime.

Within 10 minutes of the reported theft, police located the car at a hotel near Highway 351 and Interstate 20. The 13-year-old driver collided with an unoccupied patrol car before escaping the parking lot without stopping. Officers did not pursue the vehicle.

Only two minutes later, at 4:09 a.m., the vehicle hit a traffic pole at a nearby intersection at an undetermined high speed. The impact ejected the 13-year-old boy who was not driving and who later died after he was transported to the hospital. He was a reported runaway, as was the 15-year-old in the car.

The driver is facing multiple felony charges as police continue to investigate.
