McCarthy said at the time that he was “committed” to finding justice after the events of that day in early 2021 during a private meeting with members of the GOP, according to an audio excerpt from New York Times reporters Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin obtained by CBS.

“We cannot just sweep this under the rug. We need to know why it happened, who did it, and people need to be held accountable for it. And I’m committed to make sure that happens,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy also said he had spoken with then-President Donald Trump on Jan. 6 and urged him to take action to stop what was happening at the Capitol.

“When they started breaking into my office, myself and the staff got removed from the office. In doing so, I made a phone call to the president telling him what was going on, asking him to tell these people to stop, to make a video, to go out,” McCarthy said in another audio excerpt obtained by CBS. “I was very intense and very loud about it.”

McCarthy has been a vocal critic of the House Jan. 6 committee, saying it is not a “legitimate investigation” and is instead designed to attack “political opponents.” McCarthy pulled his slew of picks to participate in the panel last summer after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) rejected two of them. He is also one of several GOP lawmakers subpoenaed by the committee but has refused to provide it with any information.

“As a representative and the leader of the minority party, it is with neither regret nor satisfaction that I have concluded to not participate with this select committee’s abuse of power that stains this institution today and will harm it going forward,” McCarthy said in a statement in January.

The committee, which has two GOP members in Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, is set Thursday to show live witness testimonies, previously unseen material documenting Jan. 6, an initial summary of its findings, and more. Part of their goal, members have said, is to draw a line connecting the actions of the rioters that day and efforts led by Trump to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

Asked if he plans on watching the hearing, McCarthy told a reporter Wednesday that he would not. House Republicans aligned with Trump are preparing their own rebuttal to the presentation.
