While New York’s state government was not expected to send out its stimulus checks or property tax relief before fall 2022, eligible residents could see checks up to $1,050 in the near future.
MORE THAN $200,000 SPENT ON DRAG QUEEN SHOWS AT NYC SCHOOLS: REPORT
Eligibility for the tax rebate is dependent on a number of variables. Residents must be eligible for New York’s School Tax Relief, or STAR, program in order to receive the check. They must also have less than or equal to $250,000 in income in the 2020 tax year and a school tax liability for the 2022-23 school year that is more than their 2022 STAR benefit.
“You do not need to calculate your income to receive the homeowner tax rebate credit,” according to the government’s website. “We will calculate income for eligibility purposes, and we will issue the credit based on that determination.”
Location will be a key variable in determining how much eligible residents may receive. New York City households should expect to get an average benefit of $425, while households outside the city could see an average return of $970. Households that make less than $75,000 annually should expect to receive $1,050 due to them being considered low-income homeowners.
Residents should expect to receive their checks in June, although a select few will receive them after June due to the state needing “school tax data” that is not available until after school tax bills are issued.

The checks’ early arrival appears to coincide with New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s first electoral challenge since replacing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“Gov. Hochul and the New York State Legislature are providing you this,” the tax rebates read. The attached message has led to Hochul’s challengers in the state’s primary accusing her of “bribing the voters” before the June 28 Democratic primaries.
