Jen Kiggans won the Republican nomination in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District and will challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria in a toss-up race in November.

Kiggans, a former Navy pilot and current nurse practitioner, beat out several primary opponents after leading in the polls and in fundraising. The Cook Political Report rates the district as one of the most competitive in the country after redistricting tilted it toward Republicans.

Kiggans’s priorities include election integrity, promoting anti-abortion policies, securing the border, and opposing “transgender policies” in K-12 schools.

Luria beat a GOP incumbent in 2018 and held the seat in 2020. She is also a Navy veteran and is a member of the Jan. 6 committee. The district encompasses the southeastern corner of the state and has a 1-point Republican sway.

During the primary campaign, Republican candidate Jarome Bell called Kiggans a “RINO,” or Republican in name only, while attending a fundraiser with former President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Bell also recently stood by his comments from last year that anyone caught in election fraud should be executed.
