A trio of senior House Republicans is demanding that the city government of Washington, D.C., rescind a mandate that younger students receive the COVID-19 vaccine in order to attend school.
In a Thursday letter to D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), James Comer (R-KY), and Steve Scalise (R-LA) called on the city government to cease enforcing its rule for all students aged 12 and over attending schools, public or private, in D.C.
DC SCHOOLS MANDATE VACCINE DOSES AS OTHER DISTRICTS MOVE PAST COVID RESTRICTIONS
“As we have seen over the last year and a half, COVID-19 vaccine mandates fail to prevent the contraction or transmission of COVID-19,” the representatives wrote. “In the face of this science, the D.C. Council’s vaccination mandate creates a likelihood that thousands of D.C. schoolchildren will be locked out of learning opportunities this school year, setting these children further behind in their academic progress. We urge you to immediately stop enforcement of this unreasonable and destructive vaccine mandate before D.C. schools return on August 29, 2022.”
The three members of Congress noted that D.C. schools are an outlier in the nation by mandating COVID-19 vaccination for students. Apart from D.C., only New Orleans has mandated vaccination for students.
“As states across the country have rightfully declined to impose vaccine mandates, D.C. has inexplicably chosen to deviate from this widely-held scientific consensus,” they wrote. “The D.C. Council’s decision to impose a vaccine mandate on its students clearly presents no benefit to public health and will only serve to further harm children.”

Several states and localities have publicly flirted with implementing vaccine mandates for students but ultimately backed off.
California postponed a planned mandate until at least next year, and Los Angeles Unified School District has repeatedly delayed imposing a mandate after announcing it would implement one last year.
