Musk tweeted a note on Thursday to advertisers presenting his vision for the company while also advocating that they stay on the platform, despite concerns from critics about his approach to content moderation.

“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,” Musk said in the note.

The billionaire said he feared social media splitting into “far right and far left wing echo chambers” that continue to generate hate and increase polarization.

“That is why I bought Twitter,” Musk added. “I didn’t do it because it would be easy. I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to help humanity, whom I love.”

He also emphasized that Twitter cannot become a “free for all hellscape” with no content moderation. The platform would adhere to the laws of the land while also being “warm and welcoming to all” through the ability to choose one’s experience.

Musk then turned his attention to advertisers, arguing that Twitter wants to be the “most respected advertising platform in the world.”

Twitter’s advertising presence is limited compared to other Big Tech companies, such as Facebook and Google. Only 48% of marketers used Twitter to advertise their clients, according to a 2021 survey.

Musk’s remarks arrive a day after appearing at Twitter HQ for the first time. The billionaire is expected to finalize the purchase of the company on Friday after signing a deal with banks to get the necessary $13 billion to supplement his own money.

Musk’s tone in the note contrasts with the one he used in his legal battle with the company. Musk terminated his agreement to acquire Twitter in July over allegations that the company had lied about its spam bots. He later accused Twitter of fraud in a countersuit and has claimed that the company has acted deceptively toward investors and him.

Musk reversed his position in early October when he sent a letter to Twitter agreeing to uphold his initial offer once Twitter’s lawsuit ended and he had the relevant funding from the banks.
