A school board official in Bellingham, Washington, is hosting a “queer youth open mic” night for children aged from birth to 18 at a local sex shop.
Jenn Mason, the board director of the Bellingham School District, is hosting the event for all ages on June 1 at the Wink Wink Boutique, a sex shop in the coastal town that she owns.
The shop, which bills itself as “inclusive,” accessible to “all ages,” and “not creepy,” advertises different sexual paraphernalia on its social media pages.

Mason defended the planned open mic night in an email to Seattle-area radio host Jason Rantz, saying, “As this is a public event at a private business, anyone uncomfortable with the location may choose to not attend.”
According to posts on the shop’s Instagram page, the open mic night is not the only event the shop has hosted and advertised to all ages. The shop has hosted several concerts by local artists.

“WinkWink offers a space for people — including queer folks — to ask questions and learn about sexuality in an accepting, safe, and shame-free environment,” the shop owner said. “We receive extensive sexual health training and are a knowledgeable, inclusive community resource — something severely lacking around sexuality in our culture.”
