The suspect fled the scene of the crime prior to law enforcement’s arrival but was later engaged by law enforcement. An exchange of gunfire ensued in which a state trooper was injured, Carly Hose, public information officer for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, said during a press conference.

“Gunshots were exchanged between the suspect and the trooper. Both were injured and transported for medical treatment,” Hose said. “Multiple federal agencies including the FBI and ATF have responded to insert to assist in this investigation.”
“There’s no confirmed active threat to the community in reference to this incident,” she added.
A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, though law enforcement is investigating, per Hose. The suspect is male, but his name, age, and condition have not yet been disclosed by law enforcement. Deputies responded to the incident at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time, Hose said.
The trooper who caught up with the suspect was struck with gunfire near his shoulder and returned fire, according to Gov. Larry Hogan (R), and the individual who was critically injured in the incident was transported to a nearby facility for medical treatment, according to Hose.
Rep. David Trone (D-MD) described the situation as a “mass shooting” in a tweet.
“We are actively monitoring the mass shooting in #Smithsburg right now, and our office is in contact with officials on the ground. If you’re local, please stay away from the area as law enforcement responds,” he said.

The incident took place near Columbia Machine on the 12900 block of Bikle Road, Lt. Joshua McCauley said, per CNN.
Smithsburg is located about 75 miles outside of Baltimore.
