Three officers shot while responding in Biden’s hometown

Multiple officers from the Wilmington Police Department were shot while responding to a call on Wednesday night.

The Delaware authorities were dispatched for service when someone opened fire, hitting three of them, the department said in a statement. The shooter opened fire inside a nearby apartment, according to NBC 10, a local affiliate. The officers’ identities have not been released.

Each officer was transported to the hospital and is now in stable condition. Police have said the situation remains “under active investigation.” There was a heavy police presence throughout the night and into the morning as they attempted to subdue and arrest the suspected shooter.

Details on a suspect or motive have not been released.

A neighbor told the local outlet that she heard 10-15 gunshots and went to see what was going on outside. She and other nearby residents were urged to shelter in place.

“I saw a Wilmington police officer carrying another Wilmington police officer. He laid him down on the street in front of his police car; it looked like they started to work on him,” she said.

“Those located in the area between 23rd Street and 27th Street, from West Street to Carter Street, are asked to shelter in place and await further instructions from police,” Wilmington police said in an updated statement overnight.

Hours before the standoff began, President Joe Biden, who has a home in Wilmington, arrived at his beach house in Rehoboth Beach, less than two hours away. They made the trip to celebrate first lady Jill Biden’s birthday.

Wednesday’s shooting follows the on-duty death of another Delaware officer, Cpl. Keith Heacook of the Delmar Police Department, who lost his life in late April after being attacked while trying to stop the attacker from beating an elder couple.
