President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took a swipe at former President Donald Trump when releasing their 2020 tax returns on Monday.
The White House’s press release noted Biden and Harris were continuing an “almost uninterrupted” tradition, an apparent nod to Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns throughout his four years in office.
Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, reported a federal adjusted gross income of $607,336, adding that they paid $157,414 in federal income tax at their 2020 effective federal income tax rate of 25.9% and donated $30,704 to 10 different charities, including $10,000 to the Beau Biden Foundation, according to the press release. Joe Biden paid $28,794 in taxes in Delaware, and Jill Biden paid $443 in Virginia income tax, the White House said.

Harris and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, reported a federal adjusted gross income of $1,695,225, paid $621,893 in federal income tax at their 2020 effective federal income tax rate of 36.7%, and contributed $27,006 to charity in 2020. Harris paid $125,004 in California income tax, and Emhoff paid $56,997 in district taxes, the White House added.
“The public filing system serves to prevent financial conflicts of interest by providing for a systematic review of the finances of government officials,” a second White House press release noted.
During his term in office, Trump never publicly released his tax returns, citing how he was being audited as a reason to withhold the information. After the New York Times released a report in 2020 claiming Trump paid $750 in federal taxes in 2016 and his first year in office and no federal taxes in 10 of the previous 15 years, Trump denied the report, calling it “totally fake news.”

“Actually, I pay taxes. You will see that as soon as my tax returns, it’s under audit,” he added later. “It’s been under audit for a long time. The IRS does not treat me well. They treat me like the Tea Party, like they treated the Tea Party. And they don’t treat me well. They treat me very badly.”
