A year after his unexplained death in a Barcelona prison cell, John McAfee’s body still has not been returned to his family.

McAfee, a cybersecurity pioneer who founded the McAfee computer security company, was found dead in a Spanish prison cell on June 23, 2021, while he was waiting for extradition to the United States on federal charges of fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion. It was not until 11 months after his death that Spanish authorities released McAfee’s death certificate, and they are working on a decision on what to do with his body, which is apparently in storage somewhere near Barcelona, according to MarketWatch.

“This has been one of the longest years of my life. I would not wish this journey on anyone,” said Jen McAfee, the daughter of John McAfee.

Spanish authorities indicated in early 2022 that a final decision on the status of McAfee’s body would be released later this year after Janice McAfee, John McAfee’s widow, appealed a February decision by a Spanish judge who ruled his death was a suicide. Lawyers for John McAfee’s daughter and ex-wife have tried to gain release of his remains since his death.

An initial autopsy report ruled his death a suicide, and a Spanish court upheld that finding. Death certificates issued by the Spanish government and the State Department’s Foreign Service Report of Death on May 4 did not specify McAfee’s cause of death.

Janice McAfee believes her ex-husband was killed while being held in a prison near Barcelona and that “there may be something more sinister” at work. In a podcast interview, she said she viewed her ex-husband’s body at a morgue shortly after his death but only saw his head, with the rest of his body covered by a sheet.

Jen McAfee believes her father took his own life while in prison.

An online petition requesting McAfee’s body be returned to his widow was established in May, with the goal of collecting 100,000 signatures. As of Thursday, the Change petition has 1,616 signatures.

Less than an hour after the Spanish Justice Department confirmed McAfee’s death, his Instagram account uploaded an image of a black letter “Q,” a rallying call for the conspiracy theory QAnon. The Instagram account is no longer visible and was presumably deleted or hidden hours after the image was uploaded.
