Yesli Vega on Tuesday emerged from a crowded Republican primary contest in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District for a chance to challenge incumbent Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D).

REPUBLICAN POLL FORETELLS DANGER FOR VIRGINIA DEMOCRATIC HOUSE INCUMBENTS

Vega, a deputy in the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office and member of the county’s board of supervisors, is an “embodiment of the American dream,” according to her campaign website. Born to refugees from El Salvador, Vega is running on curtailing the Biden administration’s policies and returning to conservative values.

“You and I know our conservative values of freedom, limited government, the rule of law, and a firm reliance on our Creator are the things that will turn our blessed republic around,” Vega says on her website. “I’ve been a conservative fighter at the local level, and will be honored to advocate for those bedrock principles on behalf of you and your family in Washington.”

Vega edged out GOP primary rivals Derrick Anderson, an attorney and veteran of the Green Berets, and state Sen. Bryce Reeves, among others.

Spanberger’s district in northern Virginia will be one of the most competitive in the country, and Republicans are eyeing it as one of their best pickup opportunities. It is rated as a “toss-up” by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. Spanberger won the 2018 election and was the first Democrat to hold the seat since 1971.

The race is likely to attract considerable media attention in the November campaign, as it’s located within an hour’s drive of Washington, D.C., where many political reporters are based.

Spanberger in her House career has tried to stake out a centrist path. She has largely voted with House Democratic leadership. But Spanberger has also been critical of elements in the far left of her party over issues such as defunding the police.

With House Republicans favored to win the majority in November, Spanberger’s brand of center-left politics will be tested, particularly in a region where GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin did surprisingly well in his 2021 victory.
