An Alabama man who ordered a personalized “LGBF JB” license plate in January is now being told to return it or have his vehicle registration revoked and possibly face fines.
The Alabama Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division has reportedly recalled the license plate for language it deemed “objectionable” because it is seen as a reference to “Let’s Go Brandon, F*** Joe Biden.”
The license plate is yellow and features the “Don’t Tread on Me” Gadsen symbol.
The state sent Nathan Kirk, the owner of the vehicle bearing the license plate, a letter saying it considered the license plate “to be offensive to the peace and dignity of the State of Alabama,” according to the Trussville Tribune.
The letter stated that Kirk’s registration for this personalized license plate would not be issued or renewed and that he must return the plate within 10 days or face fines ranging from $500 to $1,000, in addition to having the vehicle’s registration revoked.

“It’s been on the road for a month, and it was approved a long time ago; it was approved immediately when I bought it,” Kirk said. “They didn’t have any issue, taking the six or $700 it cost from me.”
Kirk said he believes the move to take his license plate is “stepping on his freedom.”
“It’s 100 percent suppression of First Amendment rights,” Kirk said. “It could stand for anything; I just kind of like those letters. I could get the letters FFFFFF, and it could stand for anything.”
The phrase “Let’s Go Brandon” has grown in popularity after a reporter commented on a crowd’s anti-Biden chant while interviewing Brandon Brown, a NASCAR driver, following his Talladega win in October.

Kirk has the option to appeal the Alabama Department of Revenue’s decision within the circuit court of Blount County.
