Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, some abortions in the United States have been coming from an unlikely source: Mexico.
People are trafficking chemical abortions into the U.S. from Mexico so that women can have illegal abortions in red states, according to the Washington Post. This undermines state law and harms unborn children. It also exemplifies the need to heighten U.S.-Mexico border security.

Organizations are bringing misoprostol and mifepristone over the U.S.-Mexico border, delivering them to states such as Texas, where abortion is generally illegal. The organization Las Libres has been moving 100 doses of abortion-inducing drugs per day across the U.S.-Mexico border alone. Las Libres smuggles the drugs by hiding them in objects such as toys and vitamin jars and sewing them into fabrics. Additionally, the network has enlisted people to bring them in when illegally crossing the border, according to ABC 4.
International organizations capitalizing on weak border security to undermine American law and harm people is a problem.
Chemical abortions aren’t the only drugs coming through the border and killing people. The U.S. experienced record drug overdose deaths last year. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin, was one reason for those deaths, and fentanyl is entering the country via the southern border.
Between drugs that harm the unborn and those who are already born, along with the record number of people trying to enter the country via the U.S.-Mexico border, it’s clear America needs heightened border security. That should include hiring more border security officers, investing in physical barriers along the southern border, and increasing investment in technology such as vehicle scanners at legal ports of entry. After all, about 90% of fentanyl entering the country comes through legal ports of entry, according to the Cato Institute.

Not to mention, foreigners with criminal records from all over the world can make their way into the country through porous borders. These people include murderers, rapists, child molesters, and people who have committed other heinous acts.
Unfortunately, President Joe Biden’s administration is failing the American people on the issue of border security, among other problems the country faces. If the U.S. had serious leadership on this issue, it would save lives, born and unborn.
