The Navy’s Pacific Fleet released 35 reports on various incidents and withheld another 116 reports officials said were classified in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. All of the incident reports had been reported through the OPREP-3 reporting system between 2017 and April 22, 2021.
The reports that were released all cover what are described as “Unmanned Aircraft System/Non Traditional Aviation Technology (UAS/NTAT),” and none appear to reference experiences with unidentified aerial phenomena, the military’s preferred term for unidentified flying objects.
NATO WARNS RUSSIA: PUTIN WOULD ‘REGRET’ ANY USE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (2).jpgIn one instance, two drones flew over the USS Chafee in Oct. 2017, and one of them landed on the ship. The crew onboard were able to secure it by “force,” while the second one flew away from the vicinity. They turned it over to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, though the report does not state its findings.
A Chinese national was questioned by NCIS agents after being caught flying a small drone near the Rainbow Bay Marina, which is near Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, on July 19, 2019.
“The drone operator … stated that he had just finished visit[ing] the [USS] Arizona Memorial and decided to test out his new drone … [by taking] a view of the sailboats in Rainbow Bay Marina,” the report read, adding that “NCIS arrived on scene, conducted system background verifications and found no indications of suspicious activity. The drone operator willingly allowed NCIS agents to inspect and examine his possessions.”

There were at least three additional occurrences of incidents at Pearl Harbor in which the FBI was involved in the investigation or was notified. In one of those instances, the FBI and NCIS interviewed someone and confiscated a drone that the person threw into a perimeter fence.
A Navy spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
