Celia Gonzales, 66, was shot in the face after reportedly getting into a fight about a phone with her grandson, who then ran out of the house and took his grandparents’ car to drive to the school where he opened fire. Moments later, Gonzales emerged from her house bleeding, according to neighbor Gilberto Gallegos, who was outside gardening with his wife when he heard gunshots from across the street and watched the 18-year-old gunman drive away.

“She was delirious and in obvious pain,” Gallegos told the Daily Mail. “Celia then said to me: ‘Look at what he did to me!’ She never mentioned his name, but my wife and I knew who she was talking about, her grandson Salvador.’”
Gallegos said he and his wife brought Gonzales into their backyard as they called the police and tried to stop the bleeding. The grandmother has since been hospitalized and remains in stable condition, according to officials. However, she may never speak again, relatives said.
The witness testimony gives a clearer view into the timeline of the mass shooting carried out by 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, accused of killing 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School. The incident is the second-deadliest school shooting in the United States in decades.
The mass shooting is still under investigation as police attempt to determine a motive and timeline.
Investigators are also looking into the slow response of law enforcement during the attack after receiving reports of officials being told not to engage despite videos of desperate parents begging police to intervene amid the barrage of bullets.

Information presented by Texas officials has changed drastically over the past week, though it appears it took up to an hour Tuesday before federal agents took matters into their own hands and killed the shooter in defiance of orders not to proceed.
Uvalde is a town of roughly 16,000 people and is situated between San Antonio and Del Rio. The town is just dozens of miles away from the U.S.-Mexico border and has a Border Patrol station.
