A growing number of voters are concerned about President Joe Biden’s health and mental fitness before the 78-year-old’s birthday on Saturday, according to a poll.
While two-fifths of respondents told Politico/Morning Consult pollsters they agreed Biden “is in good health,” a majority (50%) disagreed. When asked whether Biden is mentally fit, 46% said yes and 48% said no, including independents by a 23 percentage-point margin.
BIDEN FEELS LEFT-WING PRESSURE AGAINST RESTING ON INFRASTRUCTURE LAURELS
The poll’s findings, published Wednesday, represent a pendulum swing against Biden. Pollsters from the same firm found in October 2020 during Biden’s campaign against former President Donald Trump that voters believed the then-candidate was in good health by 19 points and mentally fit by 21 points.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll is not an outlier. An October Harvard-Harris survey found 47% of respondents did not doubt Biden’s fitness, but 53% did.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll also found 44% of voters approved of Biden’s job as president and that 53% disapproved, aligning roughly with RealClearPolitics‘s 42% approval-53% disapproval averages.
Concerns about Biden’s health and mental acuity are crescendoing before his 79th birthday this weekend and as the White House comes under increasing pressure to release updated medical records. Biden has not made a health disclosure since December 2019 before the Iowa caucuses. He also insists he will seek reelection in 2024.
“He certainly does enjoy a good ride on his bike and does keep fit, eats healthy, except for the occasional ice cream. Who among us doesn’t love ice cream?” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters last week of Biden.
“And again, as someone asked earlier, you know, the president will be receiving a physical at some point soon,” she said, hinting it would occur before the end of the year.
