Five NYPD officers hit by suspected drunk driver in Staten Island, police say

Five New York Police Department officers were hit by a suspected drunken driver in Staten Island on Sunday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred while plainclothes officers were erecting barriers near Livermore and Forest avenues in Elm Park at roughly 10 a.m. local time, the NYPD said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. Authorities initially said three officers had been hit but later confirmed five were in the vehicle’s path.

Four officers were taken to a nearby medical facility in unknown conditions, though police said they were expected to survive. One officer refused medical treatment at the scene, the statement added.

The driver of the vehicle, 39-year-old Brian Manning, was taken into police custody after he was apprehended at the scene and charged with driving while intoxicated, assault, driving without a driver’s license, and refusing to take a breathalyzer test, the NYPD said.
