A prestigious California private school is under fire from parents upset that the school is teaching gender fluidity to first graders.
At issue was a book read to students at La Jolla Country Day’s lower school, titled It Feels Good to Be Yourself, by Theresa Thorn. In one excerpt, the book reads, “Some people are boys. Some people are girls. Some people are both, neither, or somewhere in between.”
Parents say they were not told about the new curriculum, only learning about it through descriptions when their children returned home. The parents believed the students were being taught “gender fluidity,” which they described as a “leftist ideology.”
Concerned parents asked the head of LJCD’s lower school, Payton Hobbs, about the book, prompting him to say, “The focus of the lesson [Child’s Name] mentioned is connected to concept of Dignity and its meaning here at LJCDS. During the lesson, they discuss ‘acceptance of identity’ as an aspect of our Dignity model. Students are also provided time to talk about what this means to them.”

Hobbs said that “after this initial discussion, they read It Feels Good to Be Yourself … which focuses on gender identity. Afterwards, the team takes questions from the students, and talk a bit about pronouns.”
But the parents felt the curriculum was not appropriate for 7- or 8-year-old children and were upset that they were never given the option to opt their children out of the curriculum.
In response to the controversy, La Jolla Country Day school issued a statement to parents urging them to speak to the school directly if they had concerns about the curriculum.
