New details have emerged in the violent Oct. 28 attack on Paul Pelosi, husband to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), in which the attacker admitted to planning to break Nancy Pelosi’s kneecaps to “show other members of Congress there were consequences” for their actions.
The Justice Department released an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Stephanie Minor on Monday detailing the events that occurred at the Pelosis’ San Francisco home.
According to the affidavit, the attacker, David DePape, told police that he was waiting for Nancy Pelosi to come home so he could hold her hostage and talk to her.
“If Nancy were to tell DEPAPE the ‘truth,’ he would let her go, and if she ‘lied,’ he was going to break ‘her kneecaps,'” the affidavit stated. “DEPAPE was certain that Nancy would not have told the ‘truth.’ In the course of the interview, DEPAPE articulated he viewed Nancy as the ‘leader of the pack’ of lies told by the Democratic Party.”
DePape generally stated that he wanted to use Nancy Pelosi to “lure another individual” to him, but the affidavit did not specify who the individual was.
PAUL PELOSI ATTACKER CHARGED WITH ASSAULT AND ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING
DePape told police he broke into the house through a glass door using a hammer and woke Paul Pelosi up in his bedroom, who he said “appeared surprised.” He said he told Paul Pelosi to wake up and that he was looking for the speaker.
Paul Pelosi, who said his wife was not present, asked DePape if there was a way to resolve the situation, per the affidavit. DePape said he wanted to tie Paul Pelosi up so DePape could “go to sleep as he was tired from having to carry a backpack to the Pelosi residence.”
Police had recovered DePape’s backpack from the back door of the house, surrounded by broken glass. Officers searching the backpack found, among other things, a “roll of tape, white rope, one hammer, one pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal.”
DePape started taking twist ties out of his pocket to restrain Paul Pelosi, but the speaker’s husband moved to another part of the house. DePape stopped him and they went back into the bedroom. While talking with one another, Paul Pelosi called the police at 2:23 a.m.
“DePape explained that he did not leave after Pelosi’s call to 9-1-1 because, much like the American founding fathers with the British, he was fighting against tyranny without the option of surrender,” the affidavit said.
The pair went downstairs toward the front door, and Paul Pelosi opened the door for police, grabbing the hammer with one hand while DePape held it with his hand.

“At this point in the interview, DEPAPE repeated that DEPAPE did not plan to surrender and that he would go ‘through’ Pelosi,” per the affidavit. “DEPAPE explained that Pelosi’s actions resulted in Pelosi ‘taking the punishment instead.'”
DePape has been federally charged by the Justice Department with one count of assault of an immediate family member of a U.S. official and one count of attempted kidnapping, for a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.
