Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum denied the allegations that Kim Kardashian damaged Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress.

Kardashian wore the dress for the Met Gala in May. Decades prior, Monroe wore the dress for President John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday celebration in 1962, when she sang a memorable rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

Collector of Monroe’s possessions, Scott Fortner, accused Ripley’s of carelessness, posting photos of alleged damage to the dress.

In response, Ripley’s Vice President of Publishing and Licensing Amanda Joiner said in a statement: “From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in.”

An anonymous representative for Ripley’s claimed that there was a condition report from 2017 that detailed the damages noted in the photo long before Kardashian ever tried the dress on. The report noted that “a number of the seams are pulled and worn.”

“This is not surprising given how delicate the material is,” the report read. “There is puckering at the back by the hooks and eyes.”

Ripley’s bought the dress for $4.8 million in 2016. When it was originally sketched out by Bob Mackie, working beneath designer Jean Louis, Monroe paid $1,440 for the custom piece, complete with 6,000 hand-sewn crystals.

Kardashian reportedly lost 16 pounds to fit into the dress, after following a “strict” regimen. She received backlash online for promoting extreme dieting.
