“We are going to support Ukraine as long as it takes,” he said Thursday in Madrid at the conclusion of the 2022 NATO summit. “We’re going to stick with Ukraine, and all of the alliance is going to stick with Ukraine as long as it takes to, in fact, make sure that they are not defeated by … Russia.”

Biden emphasized America’s commitment to Ukraine despite the conflict’s economic ramifications on, for example, record-high gas prices, as well as the domestic political repercussions.

“As long as it takes so Russia can not, in fact, defeat Ukraine and move beyond Ukraine. This is a critical, critical position for the world,” he said. “The bottom line is, ultimately, the reason why gas prices are up is this: because of Russia. Russia, Russia, Russia.”

Speaking at a press conference, Biden previewed another $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including new advanced Western air defense systems, in addition to more artillery and ammunition. Biden has committed roughly $7 billion in aid to Ukraine since the start of his presidency.

“During every step of this trip, we set down a marker of unity, determination, deep capabilities of the democratic nations of the world to do what needs to be done,” he said. “We’re moving to a place that reflects the realities of the second quarter to the 21st century, and we’re on the verge of making significant progress.”
