Johnson argued that Putin’s attack on Ukraine was an example of something that’s wrong with men and said it wouldn’t have happened under other circumstances in comments to German broadcaster ZDF.

“If Putin was a woman, which he obviously isn’t, but if he were, I really don’t think he would’ve embarked on a crazy, macho war of invasion and violence in the way that he has,” Johnson said, according to the Independent. “If you want a perfect example of toxic masculinity, it’s what he’s doing in Ukraine.”
Days prior, Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joked about showing “our pecs” during a photo op at the G-7 summit.
The two were referencing a slate of photos that Putin has distributed of himself, sometimes shirtless, while on horseback, fishing, and more.
“We’re going to get the bare-chested horseback riding display,” Trudeau joked, to which Johnson added, “We’ve got to show them our pecs!” according to the Washington Post.
Johnson himself has faced criticism in the past for sexist comments. While meeting with then-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak in 2013, Johnson suggested that Malaysian women should go to university as “they’ve got to find men to marry,” according to the Scotsman.
