Attorney General William Barr ‘disheartened’ by Seattle police chief’s resignation

Attorney General William Barr expressed his sadness following Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best’s decision to resign on Tuesday.

Best made the choice to step down amid protests related to police brutality and racial injustice. Her decision also comes as the Seattle City Council voted to cut the police force and her salary drastically.

“I was disheartened to learn of the resignation of Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best,” Barr said in a statement. “Her leadership and demonstrated commitment to her oath of office reflected all that is good about America’s law enforcement.”

Barr also praised Best on attempting to stand up to mob violence during weeks of unrest in Seattle.

“Her example should be an inspiration to all who respect the rule of law and cherish safety and security in their communities,” Barr said. “This experience should be a lesson to state and local leaders about the real costs of irresponsible proposals to defund the police.”

Best was the first black woman to lead the city’s police department.
